Honeywell 50200 Air Purifier |
Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, or offices, Honeywell air purifiers feature a true HEPA filter that
captures 99.97% of allergens like mold spores, dust mite allergen, pollen, and pet dander. And this lifetime HEPA filter never needs to be
replaced—just vacuum the filter twice a year.
The lifetime HEPA filter is the centerpiece of this unit. As a true HEPA filter it can reduce home allergen levels as well as filter out some bacteria
and viruses. The activated carbon prefilter traps some odors and smoke while catching large particles, like lint and pet hair, before they
reach the HEPA filter. This prefilter works to keep the HEPA filter working longer and only needs to be replaced once every 3 months.
The Intelli-Check™ electronic filter indicator reminds you when to clean
the HEPA filter and when to replace the carbon prefilter, and a 360 degree intake and outflow keeps air circulating throughout the room. This
model is most effective for large size room up to 304 square feet.

    Great for Asthma/Allergies
Reviewed by: Mike - Allergy and Asthma with a Cat from Cincinnati, OH

Here was my situation:
I have always had allergies and asthma triggered by allergies. I've been taking singulair and zyrtec to control these and I have an albuterol rescue inhaler. Commonly, the only time I need the inhaler is when I go to homes of people who have cats or dogs. I love animals and recently rescued a cat. Needless to say, after a few nights living with the cat I've been needing my inhaler more and have been generally miserable with allergies...even with the singulair and zyrtec.
I had been researching HEPA purifiers and thought they might be worth a try. I couldn't find many reviews from people in my situation, so that's why I'm writing this.
I woke up yesterday incredibly stuffy and needing my inhaler, it's been this way several mornings in a row. I decided to go buy one. I came home and put the purifier in the living room on full blast. In the mean time I vacuumed the entire apartment with the HEPA vac. A few hours before I went to bed I moved the purifier to my bed room with the door shut and ran it on full blast. When I went to bed I set it to medium. I didn't need my inhaler that night at all, but thought it could've been that I took the inhaler earlier that day.
When I woke up this morning, I was breathing fine...no inhaler needed. I was a bit stuffy, but I was due for another zyrtec. So far as I can tell, this thing is working! If it seems that it's failing I'll write again. But it's only been one day and I'm noticing a profound difference. I believe so far that it's well worth the cost around 150-170.
Other things to note...I also applied some pet safe Earth's Balance Dander Free to my cat. Also, the guy who lives below me smokes and occasionally there is a faint smoke smell in my bedroom. My girlfriend was over and smelled it too. After running the purifier for about an hour in there I walked in to check the smell...I couldn't smell it anymore. My girlfriend went in too and confirmed that the smell was gone! I live in a one bedroom apartment and the rooms are probably a lot smaller than the recommended room size, but hey, better to have more power than I need than not enough power.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of five is because it may be a bit noisy to some people. I have always slept with a fan for the noise, so it doesn't bother me. In my opinion, the noise is no reason at all to avoid buying this because the health benefits are far greater. The noise doesn't come from the motor, but from the movement of air...it's a constant "whoosh". But, on the lower settings it's quite tolerable, and I have a theory that once you've run it on high for a while to do the initial "scrubbing", you can probably run it on the lower settings to maintain the clean air.
I highly recommend to asthma/allergy sufferers.

A Bit Loud But Not Bad
Reviewed by: Picky Sniffer from So. Florida

The carbon pre-filter seems a bit wimpy, so I don't know that it's actually doing much in the way of eliminating much of anything. The unit itself is average as far as size and the access to the filter is fairly straight forward and very easy. There are only three speeds, the middle of which causes the unit to vibrate. The top speed is loud. Overall it's not a bad unit and I have noticed a difference. It could easily incorporate a UV, too bad it doesn't have one.

Honeywell 50200 Air Purifier
The Honeywell series of air purifiers are an economical choice
that offer a range of capacities suited to meet the needs of most
rooms in the average household. Offering excellent basic filtration
with few frills, the Honeywell 50200 is one of the most popular Honeywell HEPA air purifiers that provides efficiency without busting your
budget.
What I like about the 50200 HEPA Air Purifier
Like all of the units in this line, the 50200 is both
compact and light. With a cylindrical shape, the 50200 draws air in
from a 360° radius. A handle on top makes it easy to move from room to room, and
because of its size, this Honeywell air purifier will fit, unobtrusively, just about
anywhere in the home.
Simple and convenient to use and maintain, the 50200 has a basic
three speed control, Intelli-Check technology, sleep mode, and a
Lifetime HEPA Filter. This model provides all the
fundamentals of air filtration with no needless features. The
Intelli-Check will keep you informed as to the performance of the
filter and when each needs to be changed. The prefilter generally
needs to be changed once every three months. Simply unscrew the
bottom, slide the HEPA filter out, unwrap the old pre-filter, then
wrap the new one around the HEPA and reassemble. Because the HEPA is
a lifetime HEPA filter, all that is required is to vacuum the filter
as it becomes full, generally twice a year.
What I did not like about the 50200 HEPA Air Purifier
As a particle filtering unit, the Honeywell air purifiers are excellent. Where this model, like the others, fall short is in the area
of VOC filtration. The prefilter provides some protection due to the activated carbon, but this thin layer is not sufficient for areas
where there is a lot of smoke, chemcials or VOC's.
While the HEPA filter is billed as a lifetime HEPA, and vacuuming
will certainly increase its lifespan, some may find that eventually
the HEPA filter will need to be replaced. The single piece HEPA can
be replaced with smaller stackable HEPA filters that offer the same
performance.
Overall, you will be getting an air purifier that is inexpensive and low
maintenance but one that offers fine results. Any of these units
would work well for environments with low to medium levels of
contaminants, including cigarette smoke, pollen, dust or pet dander.
Those concerned with VOC’s, high levels of pollutants, or someone
with multiple pets should likely consider a different model. |
